Zombies attack again as the team returns to the plane, and only Gerry and his pilot escape. In Jerusalem , Gerry meets Mossad chief Jurgen Warmbrunn, who explains that months earlier, the Mossad had intercepted a military transmission claiming Indian troops were fighting rakshasa , or "zombies.

Just as Jurgen shows Gerry survivors entering the city, loud celebratory singing from refugees prompts zombies to scale the walls and attack. Jurgen orders Israeli soldiers to escort Gerry back to his plane.

On the way, Gerry notices zombies ignoring an old man and an emaciated boy. Soon after, one of Gerry's escorts, identifying herself only as "Segen" Lieutenant , is bitten in the hand; Gerry quickly amputates to prevent infection.

The pair escape on a commercial airliner as Jerusalem falls. Gerry radios Thierry, who diverts the flight to a lab in Wales. A zombie stowaway attacks during the landing approach.

Gerry blows the infected out of the aircraft with a grenade, causing the plane to crash. Gerry is injured, but he and Segen reach the lab. He explains he has seen zombies ignore the seriously injured or terminally ill since they would be unsuitable hosts for viral reproduction.

He suggests that they test this by deliberately infecting someone. Deadly pathogens are stored in a lab wing already overrun by zombies. Gerry, Segen, and the lead WHO doctor fight their way through but are separated.

Gerry continues to the pathogen vault as Segen and the doctor return to the main building. Gerry hurriedly grabs vials of pathogens but a zombie is blocking the door, prompting Gerry to inject himself and open the vault, testing his theory.

The zombies ignore him as he returns to the main building where his infection is identified and cured.

Gerry and Segen reach a Safe Zone at Freeport, Nova Scotia and find the other Lanes including Tommy who is presumed to be adopted since his family got infected.

A new vaccine derived from deadly pathogens provides camouflage for survivors and an offensive can begin against the zombies' plague.

Michael Straczynski , who identified the challenge in adapting the work as "creating a main character out of a book that reads as a UN report on the zombie wars.

The last draft I read was amazing. An early script was leaked onto the internet in March , leading to a review by Ain't It Cool News which called it "[not] just a good adaptation of a difficult book [but] a genre-defining piece of work that could well see us all arguing about whether or not a zombie movie qualifies as ' Best Picture ' material".

Brooks believed that this "show[ed] [the producer's] confidence in this project" because of the amount of money that was being invested in it.

Pre-production began in April with Robert Richardson announced as the cinematographer and Nigel Phelps as production designer. In August , Bryan Cranston entered negotiations to join the film in a "small but flashy" role but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.

Also in August, filming was set to take place along a road on the perimeter of the Grangemouth Refinery in Grangemouth , Scotland.

The location was chosen for the length of the road which is crucial to the shot. The location manager for the film said Glasgow had been chosen because of its architecture, wide roads, and grid layout.

The ship was turned into the "USS Madison ", which involved stenciling a new pennant number on to the funnel, as well as adding some "Americanism" to the superstructure.

Steven McMenemy, the Argus ' s navigator said, "The ship sailed and we were joined by four small catamarans which were being used as markers for the cameras, so that warships could be added in with CGI later.

The filmmakers initially intended to film a climactic battle scene set in Russia, and the crew moved to Budapest to film it there. In June , screenwriter Damon Lindelof was hired to rewrite the film's third act with reshoots scheduled to begin in September or October But when we started working on the script, a lot of that stuff had to fall away for the story to come together.

Lindelof presented two options to executives, who ultimately chose to shoot 30 to 40 minutes of additional footage to make a coherent ending.

Goddard later told Creative Screenwriting , "To me the big lesson of World War Z was that Paramount, Plan B and Brad Pitt simply said, 'Let's take the time to make this movie the best version of the movie before we put it on the screen for audience.

A lot of times they just throw the movie out there and say, 'We'll make all our money opening weekend and then the movie will go away.

The second-unit director, Simon Crane, said, "It wasn't character-driven anymore In March , it was reported that Paramount changed a scene in the film in which the characters speculate that the zombie outbreak originated in mainland China in hopes of landing a distribution deal in the country.

A Paramount executive contended that he was "unaware of any rejection", explaining, "We have submitted one version and have yet to receive a response.

Records released the soundtrack album for the film, which featured the original score composed by Beltrami. World War Z was initially scheduled for release by Paramount and Skydance on December 21, , but in March it was pushed back to June 21, Paramount elected to release Jack Reacher on the December date.

The website's critical consensus reads, "It's uneven and diverges from the source book, but World War Z still brings smart, fast-moving thrills and a solid performance from Brad Pitt to the zombie genre.

Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film a 3. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone gave the film a 3 out of 4, saying that "the suspense is killer".

Scott of The New York Times said, "[It] does not try to extend the boundaries of commercial entertainment but does what it can to find interesting ways to pass the time within them.

It's an anemic actioner that fosters excitement like dead limbs as it lumbers toward a conclusion. The Blu-ray Disc contains an unrated cut.

Some scenes already present in the theatrical cut are also extended. The game is a spin-off of the film, being set in Denver , Kyoto , and Paris , and featuring an entirely different set of characters.

In June , after the successful opening of World War Z , Paramount announced that it was moving ahead with a sequel. In June , Fincher was confirmed by Paramount as the director of the sequel, with Brad Pitt returning to his role.

Ten years after the official end of the Zombie War, the world is still heavily damaged, but slowly on the road to recovery. Millions of zombies are still active, mainly on the ocean floor, mountains above the snow line , and arctic areas such as Scandinavia, Siberia, and northern Canada.

Brooks designed World War Z to follow the "laws" set up in his earlier work, The Zombie Survival Guide , and explained that the guide may exist in the novel's fictional universe.

It is said that the undead contain a black, foul pus-like liquid instead of blood. Decomposition will eventually set in, but this process takes longer than for an uninfected body and can be slowed even further by effects such as freezing.

Although zombies do not tire and are as strong as the humans they infect though they appear to be slightly stronger due to lack of normal restraint , they are slow-moving and are incapable of planning or cooperation in their attacks.

Zombies usually reveal their presence by moaning. Brooks discussed the cultural influences on the novel. I read it when I was a teenager and it's sat with me ever since.

Romero as an influence and criticized the Return of the Living Dead films: "They cheapen zombies, make them silly and campy. Brooks conducted copious research while writing World War Z.

The technology, politics, economics, culture, and military tactics were based on a variety of reference books and consultations with expert sources.

Reviewers have noted that Brooks uses World War Z as a platform to criticize government ineptitude, corporate corruption, and human short-sightedness.

Many US characters blame the United States' inability to counter the zombie threat on low confidence in their government due to conflicts in the Middle East.

Brooks shows his particular dislike of government bureaucracy. For example, one character in the novel tries to justify lying about the zombie outbreak to avoid widespread panic, while at the same time failing to develop a solution for fear of arousing public ire.

Survivalism and disaster preparation are prevalent themes in the novel. Several interviews, especially those from the United States, focus on policy changes designed to train the surviving US population to fight the zombies and rebuild the country.

The ultra-rich hid in their homes, which had been turned into fortified compounds; when they were overwhelmed by others trying to get in, it became a mass slaughter.

Throughout the novel, characters demonstrate the physical and mental requirements needed to survive a disaster.

He also pointed out that the US likes the zombie genre because it believes that it can survive anything with the right tools and talent. Brooks considers the theme of uncertainty central to the zombie genre.

He believes that zombies allow people to deal with their own anxiety about the end of the world. This mindlessness is connected to the context in which Brooks was writing.

He declared: "at this point we're pretty much living in an irrational time", full of human suffering and lacking reason or logic. During an appearance on George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight , Brooks' friend and contemporary novelist Chuck Palahniuk revealed that a major influence on World War Z was the deterioration and death via cancer of Brooks' mother, Anne Bancroft.

Brooks subsequently dedicated the novel to Bancroft. Reviews for the novel have been generally positive. Gilbert Cruz of Entertainment Weekly gave the novel an "A" rating, commenting that the novel shared with great zombie stories the use of a central metaphor, describing it as "an addictively readable oral history.

Silver identified Brooks' international focus as the novel's greatest strength and commented favorably on Brooks' ability to create an appreciation for the work needed to combat a global zombie outbreak.

Silver's only complaint was with "Good-Byes"—the final chapter—in which characters get a chance to give a final closing statement. Silver felt that it was not always apparent who the sundry, undifferentiated characters were.

Club stated that the format of the novel makes it difficult for it to develop momentum, but found the novel's individual episodes gripping.

Doing so in the mode of Studs Terkel might constitute brilliance. Ron Currie Jr. The book is read by Brooks but includes other actors taking on the roles of the many individual characters who are interviewed in the novel.

Brooks' previous career in voice acting and voice-over work meant he could recommend a large number of the cast members.

It contains the entirety of the original, abridged audiobook, as well as new recordings of each missing segment. A separate, additional audiobook containing only the new recordings not found in the original audiobook was released simultaneously as World War Z: The Lost Files: A Companion to the Abridged Edition.

In her review of the audiobook for Strange Horizons , Siobhan Carroll called the story "gripping" and found the listening experience evocative of Orson Welles 's famous radio narration of The War of the Worlds broadcast October 30, Carroll had mixed opinions on the voice acting, commending it as "solid and understated, mercifully free of 'special effects' and 'scenery chewing' overall", but lamenting what she perceived as undue cheeriness on the part of Max Brooks and inauthenticity in Steve Park's Chinese accent.

Despite being the draft that got the film green-lit, Straczynski's script was tossed aside. Production was to begin at the start of , but was delayed while the script was completely re-written by Matthew Michael Carnahan to set the film in the present, leaving behind much of the book's premise to make it more of an action film.

In a interview, Brooks stated the film now had nothing in common with the novel other than the title. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This article is about the horror novel.

Yes, in World War Z some nations come out as winners and some as losers, but isn't that the case in real life as well? I wanted to base my stories on the historical actions of the countries in question, and if it offends some individuals, then maybe they should reexamine their own nation's history.

My attitude is if you go looking for them, no sympathy. But zombies come to you. Zombies don't act like a predator; they act like a virus, and that is the core of my terror.

A predator is intelligent by nature and knows not to overhunt its feeding ground. A virus will just continue to spread, infect and consume, no matter what happens.

It's the mindlessness behind it. The lack of rational thought has always scared me when it came to zombies, the idea that there is no middle ground, no room for negotiation.
